How does DOT Therapy Work?

DOT therapy (dermal optimal thermolysis) has set a new standard for skin rejuvenation and fractional laser resurfacing. During the procedure, your dermatologist will apply a pattern of tiny scanned pulses of laser energy to your skin with the laser. The DOT procedure is customised to your skin by your dermatologist, who can adjust the laser settings to tailor treatment and obtain the best results for you. Adjustments will be made throughout the procedure to more accurately treat specific areas such as acne scars on the cheeks or prominent lines around the mouth. The Smart Xide DOT laser precisely creates thousands of microscopic holes (DOT’s) in your skin which induce immediate skin tightening and stimulate new collagen growth. Patients are often amazed how tight their skin feels immediately following the procedure. DOT therapy is designed to improve the skin’s texture and tone and reduce fine lines, deep wrinkles and acne scars. The DOT therapy leaves islands of healthy skin surrounding the microscopic DOTs, enabling the skin to heal more rapidly.

How Long Does the Treatment Last?

The treatment usually lasts one hour.

How Many Treatments will it Take to See the Best Results?

The results will be visible after the first session but continue to develop for three to six months. However, patients with severe acne scarring or deep wrinkles may need two to three sessions, spaced at least two months apart.

Are the Results Permanent?

All the improvements in your skin obtained with the Smart Xide DOT are permanent.

The beneficial effects will, nevertheless, gradually diminish with the natural ageing process. Smoking, drinking alcohol and poor eating habits all accelerate the ageing process.

Can I Repeat the Treatments?

There are no contraindications against repeating the treatment programme with Smart Xide DOT.

Safety and Side-Effects

Limitations and risks associated with the procedure may include, but are not limited to:

  • Pain

  • Mild sunburn sensation

  • Flaking

  • Scarring – minimal risk here due to the fractionated component of the laser.

  • Bleeding – laser treatment may cause some pinpoint bleeding which will not leave any lasting effects.

  • Scabbing – a scab may be present.

  • Redness and swelling – will vary depending upon your skin and the treatment.

Before Treatment Instructions

Stop all prescription creams, lotions, skincare products containing Retin-A derivatives and hydroxy acids for five days before your treatment. If there is any history of facial cold sores (herpes), you must be commenced on antiviral medication two days prior to the treatment, and for a further seven days after that.

Post Treatment Instructions

  • You may experience a mild sunburn feeling that can last the remainder of the day.

  • Redness and swelling after your procedure are common and may last for 24 – 48 hours. The swelling may vary anywhere from mild to severe, depending on the size of the area treated and the location. Swelling will rarely continue longer than ten days. Redness should improve significantly in 2 – 3 weeks.

  • Applying ice packs intermittently for the first 24 hours after treatment will help reduce these side-effects. Ice packs should be placed on the hour, every hour for 15 minutes at a time following your procedure.

  • The following day, wash your skin with very mild cleanser in tepid water. Gently pat skin dry with a towel. Do not rub, scratch or pick at the treated area. Please use the cream and cleanser as supplied by our laser nurse.

  • Make-up can be worn if there are no visible scabs or blisters.

  • Do not use any products containing Retinoic acid, alpha hydroxy acids or glycolics for up to six weeks after your treatment.

  • If you have been using Hydroquinone, re-commence this three weeks after treatment as instructed.

  • Itching, flaking and dryness are also common. Your skin will naturally exfoliate as the rejuvenated skin replaces dead tissue.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure for up to four weeks.

  • Healing time will normally last one to two weeks depending on the area treated.

How Long Will it Take to Recover?

This is a non-invasive and gentle procedure with virtually no down-time. In most cases you will be able to return to work, apply make-up and resume most of your activities right away.

How Do I Care for my Skin After Treatment?

It is important to follow your dermatologist’s instructions. We will recommend skin care products and provide instructions on how to use them. These will minimise your skin of inflammation or redness and ensure the shortest healing time.

Following treatment, ice may be applied to the treated area if desired.

Medications containing Aspirin or any anti-inflammatory pills or Omega 3 should be avoided for two weeks before treatment, and one week after treatment.

Strenuous exercise and contact sports should be avoided for a few days following treatment.

Alcohol intake should be limited. This will help to reduce the risk of trauma and bruising.

Within weeks, your treated skin will feel smoother, fine wrinkles and pores will be less noticeable, and sun spots or uneven pigmentation will fade. Results depend on your condition, the number of treatments and the area treated. Your dermatologist will provide you with complete information about the post treatment care and results.
