What Is It?
The fine lines and wrinkles between our eyes, around our eyes and on our forehead come from using certain facial muscles repetitively. These creases make us look worried, older and unapproachable. The muscles that form these creases are involuntary so we cannot consciously relax them to make wrinkles disappear. Fortunately, we have many anti-ageing treatments available at the Skin Specialist Centre. Botulinum toxin is a wrinkle treatment which can relax these muscles. It also has the benefit of being able to lift our eyebrows, make our eyes appear more open and treat wrinkles around the mouth, resulting in a more relaxed, fresh and youthful appearance.
Three FDA-cleared brands of botulinum toxin are available at the Skin Specialist Centre as anti-wrinkle treatments – Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport® and Xeomin®. These products have the same ingredient (botulinum toxin) and differ only in the proteins that surround the ingredient. All are very effective anti-wrinkle products, although some seem to work better than others in different individuals.
At the Skin Specialist Centre we also use hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane® and Juvederm® as wrinkle removal procedures to restore volume loss from ageing. Fillers erase wrinkles and lines, including frown lines, cheek wrinkles, wrinkles around the mouth, under eye hollows or dark circles and scars. Injection of filler can also result in a more lifted look and reduce the appearance of jowls and sagging. We prefer hyaluronic acid fillers because they look and feel natural when injected.
Cheek wrinkles can be both from sun damage and loss of collagen and elastin or from repeatedly smiling. Smiling can cause visible grooves to form, especially in fine skin over time. Cheek wrinkles are a challenge to treat and management depends on the depth and severity of the problem. One approach for treating cheek wrinkles involves lasers, such as Fraxel Dual or the Smart Xide Dot laser.
Another approach is with fillers. Botulinum toxin cannot be used on cheek wrinkles as it would cause inability of movement on the cheeks, and possibly reduce the ability to smile or chew.
Wrinkles on the cheek need to be evaluated by an experienced cosmetic dermatologist for optimal treatments. Cheek Wrinkle Treatments with creams should also be considered. Sunscreen is essential for prevention of wrinkles.
Crows feet and under-eye wrinkles
Crows feet are amongst the most common wrinkles on the face and are due to smiling and the fact that the repetitive motion of the skin leads to grooves that present, even when the face is at rest. The easiest treatment for these wrinkles is Botulinum toxin, which allows the muscles to relax and which prevents creasing from occurring. Usually this needs to be repeated three to four times a year. A more permanent approach is laser resurfacing – Smart Xide Dot laser, Fraxel Restore Dual and eTwo, which are highly effective.
Many patients complain about the frown lines between their eyebrows making them look angry or worried when they feel happy and relaxed. Reducing the appearance of frown lines between the eyebrows results in a more relaxed, approachable, younger appearance. These frown lines develop from dynamic muscle contraction on the face. Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport® and Xeomin® are medications which are used to relax facial muscles, thus smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles. This simple in-office procedure takes only minutes to complete and can dramatically improve one’s appearance.
While your face may be the first thing people notice, your hands also play a huge role in your overall appearance. As a result of ageing, the skin on our hands can become thin and discoloured over time. The tendons and veins become more prominent in their appearance, with multiple brown spots covering the overlying skin.
In order to give your hands the treatment they deserve, we will likely use dermal fillers for volume restoration, in combination with laser resurfacing. This way we can restore your skin’s volume while we remove age-related blemishes.
As specialist dermatologists we completely understand hand anatomy, which allows us to inject dermal fillers in a way that looks smooth, natural and beautiful, providing excellent hand rejuvenation.
Fraxel Restore Dual laser is one of several lasers we use which can reduce or eliminate the appearance of age spots, rough skin and sun damage. Our treatment approach is one or two treatments with the Fraxel laser, then to proceed with fillers to avoid the possibility of breakdown of the filler with Fraxel laser treatment.
The naso-labial folds are grooves formed from a combination of smiling and sagging of the cheeks. The old approach was to inject fillers directly into the fold to reduce the severity of the appearance but the more modern approach is to inject fillers into the cheeks, creating elevation of the cheeks and reducing the naso-labial folds. It also has the advantage of rejuvenation of the face, more than direct injection of the folds. The folds can also be reduced by tissue tightening devices and some laser procedures.
Lip wrinkles and lines
Wrinkles around the lips can be due to genetics, smoking and sun damage. The best treatment for lip lines is different for each patient. Lip wrinkles can be treated with injectable fillers, such as hyaluronic acids and/or have Botulinim toxin injected to reduce their severity. Sublative rejuvenation (eTwo) is a good method for less severe lines and fractionated CO2 (Smart Xide Dot laser) is an excellent treatment for deep lip lines.
Neck and chest wrinkles
Neck and chest wrinkles are due to sun damage and there are several neck and chest wrinkle treatments which we offer. Lasers and radio-frequency devices can tighten and improve the look of the neck and chest. Fractionated CO2 (Smart Xide Dot laser) and Fraxel Dual technology not only help the fine lines and wrinkles, but also improve pigment and texture. Another treatment which is excellent for these concerns is eTwo Sublative rejuvenation and with the Genesis V. Vertical bands that sometimes appear on the neck are due to muscles and respond to Botulinum toxin.
