What is it?
Beauty is about age and skin management. As we age, our skin weakens. Cellular turnover diminishes and our skin starts to become depleted of essential nutrients. Collagen, elastin and essential components such as hyaluronic acid start to degenerate, resulting in dull, wrinkled and dry skin. In addition, volume loss under the skin with bone, muscle and fat atrophy leads to sagginess and wrinkling of the skin. The volume loss gives us a tired, unhappy or unrefreshed look. Skin and age management can reverse these changes to restore your youthful vibrance.
Factors Involved With Ageing Beautifully
There are two main factors that influence the way our skin ages – intrinsic ageing and extrinsic ageing. Intrinsic ageing is linked to our genes and our family history. Although there are some methods of correction, intrinsic ageing is often difficult to treat. Extrinsic ageing is related to environmental factors that may damage our skin throughout our life. Sun-damage, diet and lifestyles choices can have a massive impact on the way our skin ages. Extrinsic ageing issues, although still challenging, are certainly possible to improve, and sometimes even reverse.
First in skin and age management, the aim is to re-build the foundation. Dermal fillers such as Voluma®, Restylane®, Perlane® and Juvederm® may be used to replace facial volume loss. With expert technique and thorough understanding of the natural structure of the face, the volume replacement will lift the skin to fill in the under eye dark circles, tighten the jaw line, lift the brow and lift the corners of the mouth to give a refreshed, rested but natural look. As well, the skin’s health needs to be renewed with natural, yet highly effective, skin care products. Combination treatments are often used to achieve the best results, and ongoing after-care and support is encouraged. There is no “one fix suits all” with an ageing skin, and every treatment option needs to be discussed, and your individual needs.
Age management should be considered as a step-by-step approach, and with commitment from yourself and expertise and professionalism by your dermatologist, the results can be amazing.
After the foundation of your beauty is restored, the focus is turned to refining the skin. Skin refinement may include smoothing fine lines, tightening the face, evening skin tone and coloration. Dermal fillers such as Restylane® may be recommended to fill in fine lines. Lasers, light devices and radio-frequency devices such as BBL, e-Two, Excel V, Fraxel Restore Dual, Genesis V, Picoway, Revlite and Ultraformer III may be recommended to smooth lines and even tone and pigmentation. Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® are also used to relax muscles to prevent wrinkles. When you achieve the level of beauty that makes you happy, maintenance is important.
Skin and age management is about lifestyle maintenance. Daily skin care with effective skin products is essential to maintaining skin health. Some patients may choose to enhance skin treatments with periodic Hydrafacials or with lasers or light devices. Forever Young BBL is also a great skin maintenance treatment. Based on a study by Stanford University, BBL treatments every three to four months keep the genes for collagen, elastin growth turned on to prevent skin ageing. Also, maintenance of the facial volume and staying ahead of the ageing process will prevent the sagginess from returning.
